2026.09.1712:36:58UTC+00US Initial Jobless Claims Approach 60-Year Low

The number of people claiming unemployment benefits fell by 10,000 to 196,000 in the second week of September, the lowest level since July’s 60-year trough of 189,000 and well below market expectations of 208,000. Continuing claims, a measure of ongoing unemployment in the US, declined by 39,000 to 1,730,000 in the first week of the month, the lowest reading since January 2024. The figures underscore the continued resilience of the US labor market, which the Federal Reserve characterizes as being at or near full employment. Meanwhile, initial claims filed by federal employees—closely watched amid the administration’s signals of a smaller public sector—increased by 10 to 398, still well below historical norms.
